Connecting to the CSNSW SFTP

Overview

This article is to help first-time users get set up and connect to the Catholic Schools NSW SFTP server.

Prerequisites

  • You will need an SSH key pair (see Creating an SSH Key Pair)

  • You will need an SFTP client like WinSCP for Windows.

  • You will need an account set up on the CSNSW SFTP server.

Instructions

  1. Open your SFTP client, and create a New Site.

  2. Configure the site as shown in the table below.

  3. Save the configuration and connect.

firstname.lastname

Authetnication

Private Key (on WinSCP click Advanced → SSH → Authentication and then browse to your Private Key file).

Creating an SSH Key Pair

On Windows, the best way to create an SSH Key pair is using PuttyGen (download MSI installer).

  1. Go to Windows Start menu → All Programs → PuTTY → PuTTYgen.

  2. Select RSA in Type of key, and specify 4096 for the Number of bits.

  3. Click Generate, and start moving the mouse within the Window.

    Once the progress bar becomes full, the actual key generation computation takes place. This may take from several seconds to several minutes. When complete, the public key should appear in the Window.

  4. Update the Key Comment with your name.

  5. You can now specify a passphrase for the key. You will be prompted for this password each time you use your SSH Key.

  6. Save the private key by clicking Save private key. Make sure you save it to a location that is secure. Do not save to your OneDrive or Google Drive as this could result in your SSH Key being compromised. A Private Key is

  7. Highlight and copy the text in the “Public key” section and provide this to the CSNSW Service team.
